The piece

Cream Travertine · Walnut Cap · Surface Mount

A short cylinder of cream travertine, one hundred and twenty millimetres across and one hundred tall, capped in dark walnut where it meets the ceiling. The bore runs straight through, so the fixture reads as a piece of stone with a hole in it rather than as a lamp with a shade. The pitting on the outside is the quarry's and the inside face catches the light and warms it on the way out.

It surface mounts, which means no cutting into the ceiling and no recessed housing. The light goes straight down in a fairly tight column, so it works over a stair, in a nook, along a corridor, or in a run of three or four spaced evenly down a hallway. It is a small fixture and it behaves like one.

Natural Stone · No Two Alike

Turned from solid natural travertine, not stone-effect resin or printed composite. Colour runs from cream through to warm sand, the pore structure is different on every piece, and the open pits across the surface are a characteristic of the material rather than a defect.

Finish

Cream Travertine / Walnut

Pale cream stone under a dark walnut cap.

Dimensions

Diameter

∅ 4.7″

Overall height

H 100 mm

3.9″

At 120 mm across this is a small fixture. One will mark a nook or a stair landing. For a corridor, plan on a run of three or four spaced 800 to 1000 mm apart rather than expecting a single unit to light the length of it.

Installation

  • Hardwired, surface mounted. A licensed electrician is recommended.
  • No hole to cut. The walnut cap covers a standard ceiling box, so this goes where a recessed downlight cannot.
  • Travertine is heavy for its size. Fix to a proper ceiling box or a noggin, not to plasterboard alone.
  • In a corridor run, space units 800 to 1000 mm apart and set the first one about 600 mm from the end wall.
  • Clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, they will etch the surface.
  • Indoor use only. Do not install in a bathroom zone exposed to direct water or steam.
  • Do not disassemble the fixture. If issues arise, contact us.

FAQ

Will my ceiling light look like the photos? +

Close, but not identical. Travertine is quarried stone, so the colour runs from pale cream through to warm sand and the pit pattern is different on every piece. If you are buying three or four for a corridor, order them together and we will pull them from the same batch so they sit closer in tone.

Do I need to cut a hole in my ceiling? +

No. This is a surface-mounted fixture, not a recessed downlight. The walnut cap sits flat against the ceiling and covers a standard ceiling box, which is why it works in a concrete slab, a beam, or anywhere you cannot get above the ceiling to fit a recessed housing.

What bulb does a travertine ceiling light take? +

We are confirming the exact base and wattage with the maker, and this page will be updated. Whatever it takes, expect to use a warm white lamp around 2700K, since a cool white one fights the colour of the stone and makes the cream read grey.

How much light does one give? +

Enough to mark a spot, not enough to light a room. The bore is 120 mm and the light goes almost straight down, so a single unit gives you a defined pool underneath it. Plan a run of three or four for a corridor, or pair it with something else in a living space.

Can I use it in a bathroom? +

Only well away from the shower or bath, and only where there is no direct steam contact. The fixture is rated for indoor dry locations. Travertine is porous, and prolonged humidity will mark an unsealed edge over time.

How do I clean the stone? +

A dry microfibre cloth for dust, and a barely damp cloth for anything stubborn. Do not use vinegar, citrus cleaners, bleach or anything abrasive. Travertine is a calcium carbonate stone and acidic cleaners will etch a dull patch into the surface that cannot be polished out.

Care & delivery

Looking after it

Dust with a soft dry cloth. Stone, plated and painted finishes dislike solvents and abrasives, so keep both away from them; glass takes a lint-free cloth and a little glass cleaner. Solid brass is left unlacquered on most pieces and will warm and darken with handling, which is the material behaving as it should rather than a fault. Switch a fixture off and let it cool before cleaning it.

Who makes it

This piece is manufactured for Elio Marchetti by Radilum, our production partner for the collection.

We are a lighting house rather than a factory. We select the pieces, specify the finishes and the stone, and hold the relationship with the maker, and we would rather tell you that plainly than leave it unsaid. Questions about the manufacture of a specific fixture are welcome and we will answer them.

Delivery

Allow 28 to 43 business days from order to arrival, roughly six to nine weeks. Most of the collection is made to order, so that time covers the piece being built in the finish and size you chose, checked, packed and shipped. The same window applies wherever you are.

Shipping is free to Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, with no minimum order.

Returns

You have ten days from receiving a piece to have it on its way back to us, under way inside those ten days rather than simply flagged with us on the tenth. Return postage on a change of mind is yours, there is no restocking fee, and the outcome is a refund to your original payment method rather than store credit. Made to order pieces return on the same terms as stock. Contact us before sending anything back.

Damaged or faulty on arrival

Separate from an ordinary return, and a longer window: twenty days from receipt to report it. Tell us before you send anything, keep the packaging until we have answered, and photographs of both the fault and the box help. Where a piece is faulty, damaged in transit or not what you ordered, we cover the return postage.

Installation

Any hardwired fixture should go in with a licensed electrician. Where a piece has particular requirements, a sloped ceiling, a chain that can be shortened, a specific socket, they are listed further up this page.
